Understanding Humor When You See the World Differently

Humor is all around us—it's in movies, conversations, memes, and even in those little awkward moments of everyday life. But here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough: for a lot of people on the autism spectrum, humor can be… tricky.

You might hear a joke and not know whether it was meant to be funny or serious. You might take it literally. Or you might hear everyone laughing and wonder what you missed. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

But here’s the cool part: comedy is universal. That doesn’t mean everyone laughs at the same things—it just means there’s a style of humor out there for you.

Why Humor Can Be Confusing
Comedy often relies on things that aren’t always easy to catch, especially if you process information in a more literal or structured way.

Here are a few reasons jokes don’t always land the same way:

  • Literal thinking: Jokes often twist words or exaggerate reality in ways that can seem confusing.

  • Unspoken rules: Some jokes rely on social cues or shared knowledge that might not be obvious.

  • Tone and body language: Humor is often delivered through expression and voice tone, which can be subtle or hard to read.

And that’s okay. It’s not a flaw. It just means your brain is tuned to a different frequency.

You Don’t Have to Laugh to Understand
Not every joke will make you laugh—but sometimes it helps to look at why other people are laughing.

Questions like these can help:

  • Was there a surprise twist?

  • Did someone play with words?

  • Is there something about timing or context that adds to the humor?

Even if it doesn’t make you laugh, figuring out what makes it funny to others can help you connect socially—and build confidence.

Finding Your Own Sense of Humor
Here’s something I believe strongly: you don’t have to fit into someone else’s idea of “funny.” The best kind of humor is the kind you enjoy.

You might like:

  • Goofy sound effects or cartoons

  • Wordplay and clever puns

  • Random, unexpected jokes

  • Dry, serious humor that hides a surprise

  • Funny moments from real life that make you smile

There’s no one-size-fits-all in comedy. And you never have to fake a laugh to belong.

It’s Okay Not to Laugh
Let’s say it clearly:

  • You’re not “missing something” if you don’t laugh.

  • You don’t have to pretend to get it.

  • You’re allowed to ask questions.

And over time, you might find yourself creating your own style of humor. Maybe you’re a storyteller. Maybe your jokes are dry and subtle. Maybe you just make people laugh with how real and honest you are.

Whatever your comedy looks like, let it be yours.

Understanding humor isn’t about memorizing punchlines—it’s about connecting, expressing, and finding joy in your own way. Some folks get the joke right away. Some don’t. Some laugh loudly. Others just smile.

It’s all valid. And it’s all part of the experience.

So take your time. Watch, listen, learn—and one day, share your own jokes too. Because comedy is universal. You just get to define what’s funny for you.
